Public health risks

It is important to understand that keeping your animal of interest may pose particular health risks to you and your family, especially those who are classed as more vulnerable (e.g. children under 5 years of age and the immunocompromised: pregnant women; the elderly; those with HIV/AIDS; those receiving anti-rejection therapy). These risks are often underplayed or not mentioned at all by pet sellers. This public health leaflet contains advice on how to reduce the risk of getting sick from keeping the animal.

If you are interested in learning more about the health and safety risks associated with keeping exotic pets, then we would recommend reading our public health and safety resources.
